Stolen truck recovered

Stolen Truck biggerOn Thursday, July 14th, thieves broke into Daily Bread's parking lot at 191 New Toronto Street and stole one of Daily Bread's trucks. Thanks to the police as well as a citizen tip, the truck was finally recovered Friday afternoon. Our trucks are vital to ensuring we are able to distribute food and pick up donations throughout Toronto. They are also very expensive; the truck stolen had a replacement value of $150,000. We were very lucky to get our truck back, with only minor repairs needed. Police have not yet arrested anyone.

If you have information about the stolen truck, or saw a Daily Bread truck driving around the night of July 14th, please contact police at 22 Division. Thank you to all the amazing people out in Toronto who emailed, tweeted and called in their support. Your heart-warming thoughts were much appreciated by staff and volunteers.

Hot! Hot! Hot! Daily Bread at Toronto Pride Parade

Pride Parade larger pic

Pride fairies, Peter Pans and even Captain Hook made an appearance at this year's Toronto Pride Parade as Daily Bread Food Bank staff, volunteers and clients marched in costume to highlight the importance of providing food support within the LGBTQ community.

From the Daily Bread truck to the music, decorations and costumes, many people behind the scenes and on the parade route helped pitch in to make the day a success.

Why is it so important to show our support? Speaking to CP24, who were televising the parade live, Daily Bread's Todd Lamswood summed it up by saying "Daily Bread is very much about diversity, inclusion...there's hungry in every community. Whatever sexuality, race, religion - we are there to serve the public."

Volunteer Appreciation BBQ

Volunteer BBQ

Despite a heat wave that had our BBQ lunch moved indoors, almost 100 volunteers joined Daily Bread staff in July at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation BBQ.

At Daily Bread Food Bank, our volunteers are an important part of what we do. We have volunteers helping out at special events, answering our phones, helping clients at our on site food bank as well as sorting food and getting orders ready to be delivered to our member agencies. This annual event is one small way we can show how much our volunteers mean to us.

"We simply could not do what we do without their time and assistance", says Alisha Coroa, Daily Bread's volunteer coordinator.

Get involved with the Ontario Social Assistance Review

As part of Ontario's Social Assistance Review, the commissioners of the review released a discussion paper on identifying key issues and invited four Toronto community agencies, including Daily Bread Food Bank, to help organize sessions to provide feedback to make sure the review is on the right track.

In July, Daily Bread brought together of people with lived experience of poverty and front line workers to talk face-to-face with the commissioners of the review, Munir Sheikh and Frances Lankin. This allowed them to get a first-person perspective from those affected most by social assistance and who stand the most to lose, or win, from future changes to the system.

It was a rare opportunity to have an open and frank discussion in a safe environment where people could contribute to directly impact the review. Three other organizations were invited to facilitate similar feedback sessions, including United Way Toronto, Social Planning Toronto and the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants.

Food banks aren't the problem, poverty is

Many of you may have seen the commentary written by a Queen's University professor that it is time to close all food banks, published in the Globe and Mail in late July. A portion of our reply was published in the Globe and Mail's Letter to the Editors.

Dragon Boat Competition

On Saturday, July 23rd, the ICF World Dragon Boat Club Crew Championships were held at Marilyn Bell Park by Toronto's waterfront. As the event's charity of choice, Daily Bread also participated, racing against other community challengers such as the Toronto Police Crime Waves team. And yes, they beat us.
