September 2011
Daily Bread’s Fall Drive runs from September 21st until October 14th
Hunger is a reality for thousands of people in Toronto. You can make a difference in your community. Help us reach our Fall Drive goals of $400,000 and 400,000 pounds of food which will let us continue to provide food to people in need while investing in our neighbourhoods through community development and engagement.
The Fall Drive officially kicked off this past Wednesday at Nellie’s, a Daily Bread member agency that supports women and children through a number of programs, including a shelter and drop-in meals. Your continued support is the reason we can continue to provide almost 750,000 food hamper boxes and 150,000 meals made onsite in our kitchen to 170 member agencies each year.

Who’s Hungry Report Released: Who’s Going Hungry in the GTA?
For the third year in a row there were over a million client visits to food banks across the GTA. After rent and housing costs are paid, most food bank clients have only $5.67 a day for everything else including food, medicine and clothes…not even enough for a return trip on the TTC.
With the help of our member agencies and GTA food bank partners, Daily Bread interviewed people coming to food banks to find out more about who is hungry, why they are going hungry and why the need remains so high.
The information from these interviews ends up in our Who’s Hungry Report, a unique report that allows us to look more closely at the issues of hunger and poverty so that we can also work towards solutions.

Remember to VOTE on October 6th
Over the past two weeks, we have posted several articles on issues surrounding poverty and hunger in anticipation of the upcoming provincial election. We continue to challenge all political parties to make the issue of poverty an important one in this election. It’s time to focus on the individuals and families across this province who have been slipping through the cracks of a broken system for far too long.
We hope that you, as voters, take the time during this election to educate yourself on the issues and the candidates running for election in your riding. Decide what’s important to you and find out what your candidate thinks is important as well. You have a choice, a vote and a voice. Use all three and make yours count on October 6th.
