Holiday Drive Ends On A High Note!

ThankYou-Message-R1_01.jpg

Daily Bread’s Holiday Drive officially ended on January 3rd and the results are in!

Thanks to your generous donations over the holiday, we have raised $1.5 million and 1.1 million pounds of food. Our goals were $1.2 million and 1.2 million pounds of food. With the financial goal exceeding $1.2 million, this money will allow us to distribute food, support emergency food programs and buy food over and above what is donated.

"A Big Gift From Heaven"

“The food bank is a big gift from heaven,” he says. “I consider the food bank as a stepping stone. I don’t want to go to there all my life, or stay there for long. But in my present condition, the food bank gives me my smile.” – Foster, food bank client

In December, a Toronto Star reporter wanted to find out more about who gives, and who benefits from, donations to a food bank. After going to a concert being put on in support of Daily Bread Food Bank at a local bar, donations were given, numbered and the people who gave were interviewed before the donations were picked up and made their way to Daily Bread’s onsite food bank in Toronto.

Read the entire article and find out more about why people donated and who they ended up helping through a simple, charitable act.

We Need Survey Volunteers!

Every year, Daily Bread releases a report called Who’s Hungry: A Profile of Hunger in the GTA. This is an important report that uses information from almost 2000 interviews done with people from across the GTA who come to a food bank. “We can learn much from food bank clients, who have much to offer, if our ears are open,” says Susie Kim, Daily Bread’s Research Coordinator.

This report could not possibly be completed without an amazing group of volunteers who take their time and energy to conduct interviews. Volunteer hours are flexible and the surveys are done at a number of locations across the GTA from February to mid-April.

Find out more about this unique volunteer opportunity.

Curious about the kind of things you’ll learn about? One of our dedicated survey volunteers, Francine, created this video about her experience interviewing people last year.

HoHoTO Raises Over $220,000!

hohoto_l.jpg

Every year, individuals, groups of friends, co-workers and neighbours organize some amazing events to help support Daily Bread Food Bank. The reason for them all comes from the same place – a sincere desire to help make a difference and an understanding that people going hungry in a city like Toronto is unacceptable.

HoHoTO is a remarkable example of an event that went above and beyond with the hard work and passionate dedication of people who really believe in fighting hunger. As a result of their extraordinary efforts, HoHoTO has raised more than $220,000 and has also made Daily Bread’s top ten 3rd party event list since it began in 2008. Not bad for a party that started with a couple of friends talking on Twitter. This year’s HoHoTO party at the Mod Club on December 16th raised over $70,000.

You can read more about “the party that Twitter built” over at hohoto.ca. Don’t forget to save some space on your December 2012 calendar for next year’s party.

Support An Ontario
Housing Benefit

In December, the Ontario government released its third annual progress report on reducing poverty. One important way for the Ontario government to make an impact on poverty is to adopt and implement an Ontario Housing Benefit that will help people with low incomes pay rent AND put food on the table.
