An Ontario Housing Benefit would help the working poor

HousingBenefit-Banner-2.jpg

Daily Bread board member John Stapleton was a lead author of the recently released paper “The ‘Working Poor’ in the Toronto Region” published by the Metcalf Foundation. The report shows that the number of working poor in Toronto increased by 42% from 2000 to 2005.

The adoption and implementation of a Housing Benefit by the Ontario government would demonstrate the government’s firm commitment to the eradication of poverty and hunger among the working poor. There is currently little housing support available for the working poor in Ontario, who are more likely to be living in private rental housing. Almost one in four people coming to a food bank in Toronto has at least one person in their household working, often at part-time or casual work with no benefits.

Commission for the Review of Social Assistance: Discussion Paper 2

The Commission for the Review of Social Assistance in Ontario has just released its Discussion Paper 2: Approaches to Reform. This is the second stage of the review process that followed the initial consultations in the summer. In this paper the Commissioners do not present any decisions, but options for change based on what they have heard.

The paper can be downloaded here.

On page 29 of the report they specifically refer to the option of a Housing Benefit, with the consideration that “The recently released Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy made reference to a housing benefit, but there has not yet been much public discussion about how to design it. ”

Please take the time to read through the report and send the commissioners your feedback on the Housing Benefit, and on the other options presented to help fix Ontario's Income Security System.

Purolator Tackles Hunger!

DBFB-Donation-Feb-16-2012-001-sm.jpg

At Daily Bread Food Bank, we see the face of hunger every day. Increasingly, they are the faces of children, parents heading up a single-income family, and people whose financial safety nets are strained with rising costs of food and housing. The demand for the social programs provided by our 170 member agencies, which range from food banks, to community kitchens and gardens, to income and employment support, is on the rise. Thankfully, community support is also increasing.

Purolator is one of our very generous community supporters. As part of Purolator’s commitment to help alleviate hunger in Canada, the Purolator Tackle Hunger program collects donations in the form of food and cash for local food banks in Canadian Football League cities, and Daily Bread has been the recipient of this initiative, which has provided millions of pounds of food as well as financial support for food banks and food programs across Canada. Purolator also supports Daily Bread with corporate donations and teams of volunteers.

This month, Purolator’s Nicole Dupuis and Jason Ball stopped by to present another donation to help the folks who depend on Daily Bread. In the past ten years, Purolator has provided more than $175,000 in donations collected at fundraising events and collections organized by employees, the Purolator Tackle Hunger program, which involves Purolator customers as well as Canadian football fans, and “head office” support. We were thrilled to be able to show Nicole and Jason our facility and explain just a little bit about the many programs we run to get food and services to people in need.

Thank you, Jason and Nicole, and a shout out to everyone involved with Purolator’s wonderful support to Daily Bread and our community.
