Creating better food programs in Toronto
For the 10th year in a row, Daily Bread Food
Bank co-hosted a joint training day for agencies across the city with North
York Harvest Food Bank and Second Harvest. There were workshops on food and
nutrition, safe food handling, fundraising and communicating with people who
are in crisis. These workshops all aimed to provide staff and volunteers at
emergency food programs across the city with the tools they need to create
dignified and safe areas to deliver food and successful programs.
The day was capped off with a presentation by Dr.
Valerie Tarasuk, a
researcher in nutritional sciences from University of Toronto, on charitable
food provisioning in Toronto. We’ll have more about Dr. Valerie Tarasuk’s
research on our blog in June.

Daily Bread earns national recognition with Imagine Canada
On May 8th,
Imagine Canada announced its new national Standards Program as well as the first
charitable organizations to be accredited under this new program, including Daily Bread Food Bank.
The first of its kind in Canada, earning accreditation
in this program means that Daily Bread demonstrated excellence in five key
areas including board governance; financial accountability and transparency;
ethical fundraising; staff management and volunteer involvement.
“I’m really pleased that
Imagine Canada has created a program like this. We’re in some really
great company, including United Way of Toronto, Food Banks Canada and the Boys
and Girls Club of Canada. I’m looking forward to seeing more charities apply to
be accredited to the program which will only help to strengthen the non-profit
sector as a whole,” said Gail Nyberg, executive director.
Special thanks goes to David
Carroll, associate executive director at Daily Bread, for putting in so much
hard work and effort on this initiative.

Ultimate Food Challenge raises $135,000!
Nick auf der
Mauer, Rob Rossi and Steve Gonzalez are all top chefs in our books as they
impressed the crowd at the Ultimate Food Challenge (UFC) on May 2 with their
culinary talents, creating treats for the tastebuds from the contents of
an ordinary food bank food box. As
first-prize winner Steve Gonzalez said, the real winner of the evening was Daily
Bread Food Bank: the night’s take is enough to provide an emergency three-day
food supply to more than 5,000 visitors to our food banks.
The guests
were winners too, thanks to the amazing food prepared by our own Catering
Kitchen (staffed by food service trainees and students from George Brown
College), in addition to the competing chefs’ signature items and the generous
donations of beverages and desserts from our in-kind sponsors. Emcee Kevin Sylvester and judges Roberto
Martella, Bob Villeneuve, Jennifer Bain and John Maxwell ramped up the
entertainment value as they egged on the chefs.
Special thanks to the
evening’s presenting sponsor Campbell’s, Food Station sponsor Great-West Life,
Hamper Box sponsors Fido, Kraft Dinner and Maple Leaf, Challenge sponsors KPMG,
ELAD Canada, and Morgan Meighen & Associates, and Auction sponsor
Sodexo. Thanks too to all of our
supporters who purchased tickets, came out to support our first ever UFC, and
purchased the fabulous goods generously donated for our auction. See you next year!

Have you given up?
Hunger
Awareness Week is officially over but our supporters continue to give up and
give out to end hunger in our
city.
Giving up fast food for a week and
giving out what you save might mean a donation of $40 to Daily Bread. Every dollar counts, especially in the summer
when we see our food donations dwindle while the need remains constant.
Summer is a great time to pack your lunch,
head outside and give a thought to your neighbours who are struggling to put
healthy food on the table for their kids.
